police could find her. tonight, she's back with her family and nbc 10 was there as carlesha left a maryland hospital early this morning. philadelphia police say she's now resting in an undisclosed location. >> man accused of abducting her will be extradited to virginia. . minutes ago police in virginia gave us our most recent photo of delven barnes taken after he was arrested in july of this year in an unrelated case. tonight, we have live team coverage with reporters covering barnes' court appearance in maryland and his violent history. >> well, it could be a while before philadelphia police get their hands, though, on delven barnes. as we mentioned, barnes will head first to virginia where nbc 10 got this mugshot today. it was taken after he was arrested in july in an unrelated case. we have the wanted poster for barnes authorities were using in virginia, where he'll face charges of the attempted kidnapping and rape of a teenager last month.

they'll pick barnes up in maryland by saturday. >> all right. we'll be extradited from maryland to virginia to face charges in that case. he appeared in court today via video link. nbc 10's tim furlong is live at the jail where barnings is held tonight in maryland. you were in court today. did barnes say anything? >> reporter: jim, you know, he was on the bottom side of the video screen that he did his hearing on and didn't say much at all. lot of yes sir, no sirs. these hearings are very procedure hearings. a lot of legalese going around if you will. he wasn't in the actual courtroom. he actually did his hearing from here at the jail via video link. delven barnes was captured in maryland last night, why he was brought to a jail here and faced a judge today. baltimore county prosecutors have seen the video, know why barnes was a wanted man. day were glad to lock him up. >> that was an easy decision for baltimore county to decide. obviously the charge he's facing in virginia are very serious. >> reporter: carlesha's case got

national attention. barnin barnes faces serious charges in virginia where he abducted, raped and attempted to kill a teenage girl. she managed to escape. barnes is waiting for virginia authorities to pick him up and take him south. they didn't want him in any way to get off the hook. >> i can't comment what's happening in philadelphia or virginia. here in delaware county, we asked for no bail, he's exactly where he belongs. >> reporter: as we come back lif live, virginia authorities let it be known they're going to be here to get barnes and go through the gates within the next 48 hours and get him into the virginia system to face charges there. in terms of carlesha's case, the u.s. attorney's office out of philadelphia will be handling the federal charges. it's a little bit confusing. so is some of the scheduling. count on nbc 10 to keep you posted. live in maryland tonight, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. delven barnes has a criminal history that dates back nearly two decades. he's served time for robbery and weapons charges and he spent several years in prison for a

violent attack on his own wife in philadelphia. nbc 10's cydney long is live in northeast philadelphia tonight. barnes' arrest is hitting close to home. >> reporter: renee, it is, indeed. not until we spoke to some neighbors on leonard street in northeast philadelphia today did they realize the man that philadelphia police and federal authorities, the man they have been looking for all week long up and down the east coast, was, in fact, the same man that carried out a frightening attack on his wife in a home right here behind me nine years ago this month. former neighbor, jody broder, remembers watching out for delven barnes nine years ago. she didn't know his name at the time, instead his face. she knew her neighbor was married but estranged to barnings told her about an aggravated assault. barnes according to police broke a restraining order and hit in the closet, attacking his estranged wife and her father with a baseball bat. he was released from jail last

year. the ex-wife moved from the leonard street home. >> she was still shooken up and said she was leaving. she didn't say where she was going. >> reporter: how frightened of him was she? >> oh, extremely. extremely. to call and have my pit bull come and walk her around the house every day, you know, she was scared. >> reporter: we also spoke to delven's uncle today to ask if he will be remorseful for his crimes targeting women. is he remorseful for what he's done with carlesha? >> i doubt it because apparently he's had a lot of problems with women. >> reporter: now, we are told that barnes ex-wife since moved to louisiana. i got a cell phone number for her today. when i dialed it, the woman who picked up the phone as soon as i announced who i was, she hung up. let's toss over to my colleague, deanna durante, she is live at northwest detectives tonight with more, deanna, on what police are saying about how this crime unfolded. >> reporter: yeah, you know, it's an unusual look when you

get a group of philadelphia detectives lined up in front of you. normally when cases are announced their conclusion, it's the commissioner or spokesperson or someone from the command staff. tonight we heard some emotional remarks from one of the detectives on the case. the detective who made a promise to carlesha's mother to bring her home alive. >> i'm just glad she's home. >> reporter: detective jim sloan says he was in constant contact with carlesha's family every time new video or information was released, he called them. last night he got to make the call to tell them she was found alive. >> we were all confident. that's why we said it. that's why i said it. i just felt something. hope. >> reporter: sloan says when he saw this tape and heard carlesha's screams -- >> it's something i wish i didn't hear. >> reporter: he knew this was no ordinary case. sloan and a team of detectives are quick to point out federal partners helped track the vehicle and helped find surveillance video and also came up with crucial out of state evidence to track delven barnes but said the case wouldn't have

gotten the attention it deserved without this man, dwayne fletcher who also heard carlesha's screams for help. and tonight outside northwest detectives i did ask investigators about reports of barnes' confession. they say good, that gives hope to them that perhaps she won't have to go through a trial. reporting live outside northwest detectives, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, deanna and cydney. police were able to track down delven barnes thanks to a gps tracker on his car. it was there because barnes had bad credit. coming up the nbc 10 investigators explain how the technology works and who could be using it on you. to the weather now. a live look at philadelphia international airport. it is out there somewhere. you can barely see the lights in the distance there through some fog in our area right now. it's causing two-hour delays at the airport. airport telling us you should check with your airline if you

have one, flight in or out, for the latest on departures. taking a look now at first alert radar. more showers are moving through and some of them could be heavy. >> nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the rain. and glenn, who's seeing it right now? >> well, renee, right at the jersey shore, they've been getting the heaviest rain in the last 15 minutes or so. and in philadelphia, it's tapering off. the weather conditions improving a little bit. at least temporarily. but the heaviest of the rain is just now moved offshore. atlantic city and margate and brigantine. it was pouring rain just ten minutes ago and now that area has moved out. in the philadelphia region, we still see some light rain, drier conditions just to the west coming in, but there's still more showers out there. so it's not the end of the rain for the night, but obviously the heaviest of it has moved away. there's still more to come in tonight. we have some showers and we then have some increasing winds.

those winds are going to break up the fog. also knock the temperature down. it's already chilly north and west, but it's rather mild in southern delaware. still 60 degrees in georgetown. that's going to change, too. more on the cold blast to come, and a bigger cold blast next week with the seven-day in a few minutes. a 3-year-old boy is beaten to death and chester county authorities are telling us the suspects are his own mother and her boyfriend. jillian tait and gary fellenbaum charged with murder, accused of killing tate's 3-year-old son, scotty mcmillian. the couple l used a knotted rope, aluminum strips and a curtain rods to torture the boy inside their home in west caln township. the boy died tuesday night. >> jillian tate and gary fellenbauh tied the two boys up by their feet over a door and beat them. while they were doing that, they were laughing. >> someone to do something like

that to a child, they have to be possessed or they're just evil. >> a 6-year-old and an infant were also living in the home. both are in protective custody at this hour. today, a soldier who served our country during the civil war received the medal of honor more than 150 years after he died. >> today the nation that lived pauses to pay tribute to one of those who died there. >> president obama awarded the medal of honor posthumously to army first lieutenant alonzo cushing for conspicuous gallantry. the first lieutenant's two cousins and their families joined the president at the white house to commemorate his service and sacrifice. cushing served as commanding officer of the u.s. artillery during combat operations near cemetery ridge at gettysburg, pennsylvania. the confederate forces within 100 yards of his position, he was shot and killed on july 3rd, 1863. >> for this american family,

nbc 10 following today's developments in the investigation of a philadelphia woman who was kidnapped. a maryland individual ordered the suspect, delven barnes to be extradited to virginia to face other kidnapping charges from last month. not clear when barnes will face federal charges for the kidnapping of carlesha freeland-gaither in germantown. that happened sunday night. carlesha is resting back in philadelphia at home with her family tonight.

digging into delven barnes' past. the nbc 10 investigators found more than just a criminal history. >> nbc 10 investigator mitch blocker joining us now. mitch, you discovered barnes' financial troubles may have been his downfall. >> exactly. specifically his bad credit. police found him because they were able to track his car. learned the reason his car had a gps device at all, his lender did not trust him to pay off his car loan. the nbc 10 investigators found delven barnes' capture may have been in the works since 2002 when he first defaulted on a loan which led him to file bankruptcy. his ruined credit made it nearly impossible for him to get a car loan. >> this is your actual gps unit. >> reporter: which is why he had a gps device like this one installed without his knowledge. >> we're going to show you how to put the device in. >> reporter: companies like phoenix-based gps and track help lenders keep track of high-risk property. michael fischer runs the company

and fospoke with us over the phone. >> a lot of vehicles financed through smaller dealership are going to use them for protection of their vehicle ar or assets. >> reporter: the gps devices his company installs across the country shows the car's location once a day but if necessary can track cars in realtime. >> updates once a day. can care less where the vehicle is at or what the customer is doing. it's primarily just for recovery. >> with the help of the media and many, many citizens who called in tips, we were able to identify this individual, identify his car. >> reporter: police say one of those tips came from someone who knew barnes' car could be tracked. it's seen here being hauled away. >> when the subject exited the vehicle, he was apprehended and that's when miss freeland was recovered. >> reporter: all because of what some call a questionable practice of tracking drivers without their knowledge. >> we're not going to go to any great length as far as hiding the unit, but we are going to mount it in a stealth location

us up for a chilly weekend. now, at the moment, hey, the visibility is getting better. conditions will improve at the airport over the next couple l of hours. we're able to see the buildings a whole lot better. as the heaviest of the rain has moved out. 53 degrees. we're 9 degrees colder than we were at this time yesterday. there's still not much wind. we need the wind to clear us out here. we're still in the upper 40s. well to the north and west. some places didn't get out of the 40s all day up there. and farther south areas got into the 60s. but as you can see, it's down in the mid 50s at the moment. the heaviest of the rain has moved out. it moved across very rapidly across delaware and south jersey. we still have showers back to the west, but they're not nearly as heavy, and as the sun has set, we're not expecting them to get heavier, but we can get showers just about any part of the area over the next few hours. here's a lot of it. back to the west.
